Coach’s $0.02: Strength and Powerlifting Programs ARE THE SAME
Many new lifters think programs designed to get them stronger are different than those designed for powerlifting. The reality is there’s NO DIFFERENCE. The same exercises powerlifters use to build their total are the same ones used to get those who want to increase their general strength. Think about it this way, powerlifters’ goal is to get stronger. That’s the same goal as the general strength trainee! What does this look like? The core of the program is the barbell back squat, bench, and deadlift. There are other exercises like the standing overhead press and squat/press/pulling variations that make up the rest of the program. As advancement occurs for the general strength trainee, there’s more room for exercise variation but their program is still squats, presses, and deadlifts. For beginners though, the programs are the same.
